“Sex and the City” and the Importance of Companionship

“Sex in the City,” a popular TV show that aired in the 90’s, is widely acclaimed for its honest portrayal of women’s experiences navigating the world of fashion, sex, and friendship in New York City. The show has made a lasting impact on pop culture as it gave us the iconic character of Carrie Bradshaw and amassed a cult following of fellow fashion lovers.

Beyond the clothes and amusing accounts of their romantic relationships, the show focuses on the close companionship between the four main characters.

Each of the women have distinct fully-fledged character arcs with different personalities and ambitions. Charlotte is a serial monogamist, while Samantha prefers casual dating, but to Miranda, relationships are a second priority to her professional life. Carrie approaches dating as research because it is so entangled with her job as a sex and relationship columnist.

What this show does so beautifully is depict the close relationship between such seemingly different women. All of the women face their own struggles in their relationships. They never feel the need to compete with one another and celebrate the other’s successes.

To me, this show depicts the importance of friendship in evolving as an individual. Your friends can be some of the most influential and important people in your life.
