Summer Drinks Around EL

If anything besides a high-powered fan perfectly compliments sweltering heat and humidity, it’s an ice cold drink. Whether one is going to the pool, the beach or simply back home to enjoy the A.C., a refreshing beverage is a game changer. For those who are spending the summer in East Lansing or just curious about what the city offers beverage wise, there are plenty of places with uniquely delicious cold drinks. Instead of sticking with bland and boring iced coffee or lemonade, one should step outside their comfort zone and try something new! In the list below, we will highlight some of our favorites from around town. Try them all and let us know what you like best!

Lavender Amalfi Soda from Espresso Royale

Espresso Royale is known for keeping Spartans caffeinated during finals week, but their menu features a variety of coffee-less beverages as well. The lavender amalfi soda is not only a great choice because of how delicious it is, it also has a pretty purple hue. It is made by mixing carbonated water, lavender simple syrup and cream or milk. The lightness of lavender pairs well with carbonation, but lavender-haters (if that’s even possible) will be pleased to know there are many other flavors to choose from, like hazelnut and vanilla. This is our go-to summer drink!

Mangonada from Corner Frutas

This business is located in Haslett, but it is undoubtedly worth the drive from East Lansing. Corner Frutas is tucked in the back of Cone Zone ice cream shop and serves a variety of traditional Mexican snacks and fruit drinks. The mangonada is part-fresh part-frozen mango mixed with chili powder. The flavor is unique and quite refreshing. Additionally, the servings are large and customers get complimentary housemade potato chips. What could be better?

Oreo Milkshake from Potbelly

Sandwiches might take the spotlight at Potbelly, but their milkshakes are a hidden gem. Located in the middle of downtown East Lansing, a milkshake from Potbelly is the perfect pick-me-up after browsing the shops on Grand River. There are many different flavors that can be enjoyed alone or combined, and they all come with a small cookie on top. While each flavor is delicious in its own unique way, our personal favorite is the oreo milkshake. Try them out and see which one you like best!

Green Tea Bingsoo from Snowflake

Snowflake Cafe is a relatively new cafe in East Lansing; however, it has already gained popularity for the signature bingsoo dessert. Bingsoo is a Korean dessert with a base of shaved condensed milk and then varying ice cream/sweet toppings depending on which flavor is chosen. Our personal favorite flavor is green tea, but chocolate and red bean are delicious as well. Snowflake conveniently offers two sizes of bingsoo: one comes in a cup while the larger size comes in a bowl. This treat is unlike anything else in the East Lansing area and we highly recommend trying it!

Sour Green Apple Slushie from Tasty Twist

Would East Lansing even be East Lansing without Tasty Twist? Even with almost always long lines in the evenings and on weekends, Tasty Twist is the staple East Lansing ice cream shop. From ice cream cones to sundaes and smoothies, the menu is diverse and very reasonably priced. Their sour green apple slushie is a hidden treasure. It is the perfect combination of refreshing, sour and sweet! Fret not, sour-flavor haters– there are many different flavors to choose from.
