Located in the Northern end of the city, Old Town serves as physical proof of Lansing’s resilience and growth in recent years. Visitors from all over flock to Old Town to eat authentic Mexican food at Pablo’s Panaderia, drink lavender cascara sodas at Bloom Coffee Roasters, and watch hundreds of salmon swim up the Grand River at the Brenke Fish Ladder. However, a fairly new but extra sparkly gem of a business is also located in this historic area— Metro Retro.
The eclectic store is located at 304 E Grand River Ave and the vibrant signs, rainbow flag and advertisement of selling “dead people’s stuff” make it impossible to miss. Walking in, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the racks of clothing, shoes, handbags and more. The store is small, but it has a lot to offer. From Betsey Johnson to Calvin Klein, there is a wide-range of both modern and vintage men’s and women’s designer clothing just waiting to be rocked. Metro Retro also has fitting rooms behind the cash register so customers can make sure they are completely satisfied with their finds.
Shopping is typically fun on its own, but the two owners of Metro Retro are quite outgoing and entertaining, which makes the experience even better. Ted and Dannie Stewart opened Metro Retro in April of 2016 to bring a quality thrift store to an area that seemed to only cater to an upscale crowd, according to Ted. Both owners work to create a friendly and accepting environment in their store, which is one of the things that make it so great.
While vintage clothing is the primary commodity at Metro Retro, there are also many other products like magnets, stickers and other niche items that are guaranteed to make you the best Secret Santa ever. I’m serious— from ironic t-shirts and funny socks to silver rings and necklaces, Metro Retro has it all. The items are all reasonably priced and there are occasional sales, as well.
As far as vintage clothing and gift stores go, Metro Retro is at the top of our list. Between the products, prices, and workers, it cannot be beat. On top of all this, shopping at Metro Retro helps support your killer style while also supporting local business…what more could you want than that?
